Mrs. Alice Marie Lofton was born in Macon County, Georgia on January 11, 1941 to the parentage of the late Jonas and Alice Mathis Thomas. Mae, as she was affectionately called, was a member of the first graduating class of the new D.F. Douglass High School. She was Valedictorian of the class of 1959. She was also crowned Miss Douglass High School. After graduation, Mae attended Fort Valley State College and majored in Mathematics.
She relocated to Rochester, New York in 1961 and matriculated at the University of Rochester School Of Nursing. Mae received her credentials and became licensed by the State of New York as a Registered Nurse. She worked at Genesee Hospital, Strong Memorial Hospital and as Head Registered Nurse at Pavilion Nursing Home.
Mae and her family moved to Tampa, Florida in 1976. She was also licensed by the States of Georgia and Florida respectfully. Her last gainful employment was at Tampa General Hospital where she worked as the Head Nurse in Charge. On Sunday, June 6, 2010, she finished her race and entered into rest with her heavenly Father. No longer does she have to battle with the uncertainties of life, the challenges of seeking what is real and what is imaginative. For we know that God is real and that he has a prepared place for his prepared children.
Preceding her in death are her siblings: Dorothy Hooks, James L. “Bug” Thomas, and Estella Kendrick. Left to cherish her memory her two children: Jarrett (Kelly) Lofton of Tampa, Florida and Alicia Warren of Warner Robins, Georgia; her beloved grandchildren: Jaylen, Jonathan, Nyah, and Torrance, Jr.; siblings: Willie H. Thomas (Carrie) of Rochester, New York, Bettye Zachery (Clyde) of Fort Valley, Georgia, Barbara Ann Parker and Mary D. Thomas (Warren) of Rochester, New York, Charles Thomas (Ila) of Lawrenceville, Georgia and Joan Granville of Montezuma, Georgia; sister-in-law, Mary Thomas of Rochester, New York; paternal aunt, Nameless (Tot) Felton of Rochester, New York, maternal aunts, Alice Mae Mathis of Fort Valley, Georgia, Annie Mae Mathis of Warner Robins, Georgia and Lessie Mae Mathis of Chicago, Illinois. Mae will be greatly missed by her many nieces, nephews and cousins.
