OBITUARY

George Howard Cochran, Sr., son of the late Dave Royal Cochran, Sr. and Mrs. Georgie Ann Walker Cochran was born May 1, 1935 in Cairo, Grady County, Georgia.

 

George grew up in Cairo and attended public school in Grady County.  He graduated from Washington High School in 1952.  This graduating class was the first required to complete twelve years of schooling to graduate from high school (12th grade was added) in the history of Washington High School.  After graduating from high school, he attended Savannah State College, Savannah, Georgia, graduating with a B.S. Degree in Mathematics in 1957.

 

Honoring the call of Uncle Sam, George was drafted into the U. S. Army (1958), Basic Training CORE of Engineers; Advance Training 32nd Medium Tank Battalion.  George’s tour of duty included Headquarter and Headquarters Company, Friedberg, Germany, France and England. 

 

After completing his tour of duty, receiving an honorable discharge, he began his career in the field of education as a Mathematics Teacher in Summerville, Georgia.  He continued his educational endeavors by attending Fort Valley State College, Atlanta University, University of Florida and NOVA University.

 

Seeking a chance for advancement and stability, George moved to Florida in 1963 to continue his career as a Mathematician at Howard High School, Forest High School, Osceola Middle School, and Community High School.  He retired from the field of education in 1994.

 

His memory will forever be cherished by his surviving family: a son, George Howard Cochran, Jr., stepson, Kelvin Berriam, both of Ocala, FL; Grandson – Shamaryo Cochran, (Saronnika Richardson, Odessi’, Cyinana); three sisters, Lillian Lynch, Jacqueline McClendon, both of Monroe, GA, Virginia Ingersoll, Atlanta, GA; one brother-in-law, James Harvey McClendon (Jacqueline); first cousins, Robert Eric West, Americus, GA, Thelma Denise West, Montezuma, GA; niece, Jeanine Katryce McClendon, Monroe, GA; nephew, William Douglas Ingersoll, Atlanta, GA; great nieces, Brittany Nicole Ware; Monroe, GA, Chyna Ashonti Ingersoll; Atlanta, GA; great-nephews, Kristophor Sean Ware, Chesapeake, VA, Nikolas Jarrel Ware and Wesley Trevon Ware, all of Monroe, GA; Jarkee Freeman;  Columbus, GA, other cousins, relatives and friends.is
