Lozano's Flagstaff Mortuary ~ est. 2006                                                   Flagstaff Mortuary ~ est. 1956

C. Russell Turner, a Flagstaff resident since 1960, born in San Diego on June 8th, 1926, died on Wed., June 29th, at the Olivia White Hospice Home.  He is survived by his son, Tom; Tom’s supportive partner, Cathy Cox; daughter, Terry Challis and his grandson Brandon, who recently graduated from NAU.

Many long-time residents knew Russ.  He was very active in community organizations in the 60’s and 70’s.  He served on the Flagstaff City Council from 1968 to 1972, when he made an unsuccessful run for Mayor.   He served on the Board of the Boys Club and was instrumental in getting the Boys Club moved from the basement of the Weatherford Hotel to its current location on Isabel.   He was a former President of the Evening Lions Club, a member of the Elks, VFW, American Legion and served in the Navy from 1944-46.  He was in the insurance business here and in Page and also was former Commodore of the Lake Powell Yacht Club.

Russ was an early proponent of the 4th street overpass and the ice rink.  As Chairman of the Parks & Recreation Board, he was instrumental in starting the over 40 slow pitch league in 1966.  He also served as Chairman of the Racing Commission for 15 years.

Russell’s wishes were not to have a formal funeral or memorial service, but there will be a celebration of life to be held at Lake Powell, “Turner Cove” in late September or early October.

Russ and his family have long supported the passing of laws to increase end-of-life choices.  If anybody wishes to make a donation in Russ’s memory, Compassion and Choices (www.compassionandchoices.org) or the local Olivia White Hospice Home (www.northlandhospice.org) would be good organizations which would appreciate your gift.
